Youtube Channels
Today, the easiest way to learn for free is by watching videos in your target language. Here are some examples of great videos to include in your daily life:- Français avec Pierre- Français Autentique- InnerFrench- Monde des Titounis (short stories in french for children)- French mornings with ElisaBy hearing french every day your brain will adapt to the new sounds and will also learn to expressions and words over time.
Books
Now you may feel very intimidated by french books but the best way to learn effectively is not by starting your reading journey with books for older folks, absolutely not. The best way to learn without feeling defeated is to look up two different types of books.- Ones you have already read in your own language.- Ones that are meant for toddlers and children. These will give you an opportunity to learn slowly and properly and to not feel destroyed by the amount of unknown words in one paragraph.
Applications
Feeling like you will not learn anything by just reading or watching something? Another great exercise is to do short exercises in games or purely for educational reasons with the apps I will be sharing.
- Duolingo
- Babbel
- Learn french for beginners
- Learn french daily
- TV5MONDE: learn french
DELF exemplars
As a student myself I understand the stress behind examinations approaching. If you need to feel more secure about your work and your level you can find the DELF A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 exam samples on the DELF/DALF website by searching DELF (level) Sample Papers.
Here is how to know your level:
A1 - Beginner
A2 - Beginner, starting to form sentences that are simple.
B1 - Starting to grow in your vocabulary and grammar and not having to think too much of what words to use when.
B2 - Being able to join in various topics but still forgetting some words sometimes.
C1 - You can talk to any local without too many issues and is able to join any French University.
C2 - Fluent
Movies/Series
Just like books I suggest you start with movies and series you have already seen or children's movies as the vocabulary is more simple but in addition to that, you can also watch a new show with subtitles. However, in some cases, the subtitles do not give the right translation so you cannot rely on subtitles only. Remind yourself to look for the words in a dictionary before you start using them in your daily life.
Translation Services
You need to look up the translation to a text but do not have enough time to do so by yourself word for word? Here are some great services that do it much better than the most commonly used Google translate.
DeepL - Very efficient and even translates expressions for them to make sense in your own language.
Reverso - Will do the job for simple texts and is easy to use.
